Intent
At Tackley CE Primary School, our PSHE curriculum supports children to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to navigate life safely, confidently and responsibly. We use the Kapow Primary RSE & PSHE scheme of work to provide a progressive, whole-school approach to PSHE, Relationships Education and Health Education.
Through PSHE, children learn how to build and maintain healthy relationships, look after their physical and mental wellbeing, understand how to stay safe, make informed choices and become active, responsible members of society. This links closely with our school values: Be Kind, Be Curious and Be Responsible.
Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE curriculum covers the statutory requirements for Relationships Education and Health Education, as well as wider PSHE learning. It also supports children’s personal development and promotes the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, respect and tolerance, and individual liberty.
Quality PSHE and RSE teaching is an important part of safeguarding. Children are taught, in an age-appropriate way, about respectful relationships, boundaries, consent, online safety, emotional wellbeing and how to seek help when they need it.
Implementation
PSHE is taught using the Kapow Primary RSE & PSHE scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum from EYFS to Year 6.
In EYFS, learning links to the prime area of Personal, Social and Emotional Development and focuses on:
From Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2, the curriculum is organised into five key areas:
These areas are revisited throughout the school, allowing children to build on previous learning with increasing depth and maturity. Kapow describes this as a spiral curriculum, where pupils revisit key concepts, use prior knowledge and develop their understanding as they move through the school.
Lessons include discussion, reflection, role play, scenarios, paired and group work, and opportunities for pupils to ask questions in a safe and respectful environment. Pupils are encouraged to use key vocabulary accurately and to explain their ideas thoughtfully. Kapow also places emphasis on oracy, helping children to articulate their ideas, listen to others and express opinions respectfully.
Teachers adapt lessons where needed to meet the needs of their class, including pupils with SEND, while ensuring that all children can access the core learning. Assessment opportunities are built into lessons so teachers can check understanding, revisit key concepts and respond to pupils’ needs.
Impact
By the time children leave Tackley CE Primary School, they will have developed the knowledge, vocabulary and confidence to talk about their feelings, relationships, health, safety and responsibilities. They will know how to seek help, how to make informed choices and how to contribute positively to their class, school and wider community.
Children will be supported to:
Through our PSHE curriculum, children are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and challenges of life now and in the future.
Relationships and Sex Education
Relationships and Sex Education is taught as part of our wider PSHE curriculum. In primary schools, Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory. Sex education beyond the National Curriculum for Science is not compulsory in primary schools, although schools may choose to teach age-appropriate content.
At Tackley, RSE is taught in a sensitive, age-appropriate and inclusive way. It helps children understand healthy friendships, families, respectful relationships, personal boundaries, consent, puberty, emotional wellbeing and how to stay safe on and offline.
The Kapow Primary scheme includes learning about:
Parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from statutory Relationships Education, Health Education or National Curriculum Science. Parents do have the right to request withdrawal from any non-statutory sex education taught outside the Science curriculum.
Our RSE Policy provides further information about what is taught, when it is taught, how parents are informed and the right to withdraw from non-statutory sex education.
