Autumn Term

Details of what we will be covering in each area of the curriculum can be found in the curriculum map (see below).

Our class novels this term are Holes and Skellig. Children are welcome to bring in any personal copies but please don’t read ahead at home!

Homework

It is an expectation that children are read with regularly at home (both reading themselves and being read to). Please record reading in children’s reading diaries, if children record at least four reads a week at home they will receive a star for their star charts. Children should bring their diaries into school on Mondays for teachers to check and sign.

Homework for Year 5:

For Maths, the children will be bringing home a times table sheet on paper to learn and practice. This will vary according to individual need. The children will rehearse this at school throughout the week. They can then practice on EdShed if they wish (this is optional and no league tables will be used)

For spelling, children will bring home a spelling homework book each Friday. Inside, they will have 10 spellings that we have been focusing on in school that week. The book will also include a range of ideas and strategies to help practise spellings at home. Children are encouraged to choose the methods that work best for them. If they do any written practise, it should be recorded in their books. 

Research shows that short, regular practice is the most effective way to learn spellings. Little and often (for example, 5–10 minutes a day) helps children to remember spellings more securely than longer, less frequent sessions. 

Please ensure that spelling books are returned to school the following Friday so that new spellings can be added for the next week.

Children have their login details in their reading diaries. Feedback will be given to children verbally in school and all those that complete the task will be rewarded with 20 house points and stars for their charts.

A Maths assignment will be set on EdShed on Fridays and due in the following Friday. It will cover an area that children have already been taught in school.

PE

PE will continue to be on Mondays and Wednesdays when children must come to school wearing their PE kit which includes a t-shirt in their house colour (not football shirts please).

Forest School

Attenborough 5 will attend Forest School on Thursdays for the Autumn Term.

Swimming

Year 6 will swim on Tuesdays this term. They need to bring costumes, a towel and goggles if required.

 

Please ensure children have a named water bottle in school with them every day.
